Where They Live?

Recorded data on Highland cows dates back as far as 1884. At that time, cattle breeders in the western regions of the USA recognized the natural abilities of the Highland animal. This made the Highland a major contributor to the success of the American cattle industry. Today, Highlands are found in North America, Europe, Australia and South America.

What are the Characteristics of the Highland Breed?

Maintenance costs for Highland cattle are considerably lower than for other breeds. Highland cattle do not need elaborate housing, feed supplements or expensive grains. So, Highland cattle can still be healthy and productive in conditions where many other breeds would perish. Cold weather and snow have little effect on them. It's a breed that can easily adapt as far north as Alaska and the Scandinavian countries and as far south as Texas and Georgia. The lack of ideal pasture or grazing land is another reason to consider the Highland breed. It is said that the Highland will eat what other cattle never eat and get fat on it! The Highland is also an excellent scanner, able to clear a brushy area quickly and efficiently.

Mother Highlands are known for often breeding beyond the age of 18 and raising 15 or more calves in their lifetime!
